A flawless spray tan isn’t just about the application, what happens before and after your appointment plays a major role in how your tan develops and lasts. If you’ve ever wondered why your tan didn’t turn out quite right, chances are one of the following factors could be to blame. Here’s a breakdown of the most common things that can interfere with the development of your spray tan:

1. Improper Skin Prep

Your skin is the canvas, and how well you prep it can make or break your tan. Failing to exfoliate thoroughly can leave behind dead skin cells, leading to uneven color and patchy fading. Using oil-based scrubs or products with heavy residue can also create a barrier between your skin and the tanning solution, preventing proper absorption.

Tip: Use a gentle, oil-free exfoliant 24 hours before your appointment, and avoid heavy lotions or body washes with oils the day of your tan.

At YYC Spray Tans: I apply a professional-grade pH balancing prep spray before every tan to help neutralize the skin’s pH level. This helps the tanning solution absorb more evenly and develop to its full potential.

2. Wearing the Wrong Clothing Post-Tan

Tight clothes, bras, or anything that rubs against your skin can cause your fresh tan to smudge or develop unevenly. It’s important to wear loose, dark clothing after your session to avoid friction and staining.

Tip: Go braless if possible, and avoid leggings, jeans, or anything fitted while your tan is processing!

3. Water and Sweat Exposure

Spray tans need time to develop, 8-12 hours for a regular tan and 2-5 for an express rinse. Any contact with water, including sweating during this window can create streaks or spots by interrupting the developing process.

Tip: Avoid workouts, washing your hands, or getting caught in the rain until your tan is fully developed and rinsed.

4. Using the Wrong Products

Certain soaps, lotions, and even deodorants can affect how your tan sets or fades. Products that contain sulfates, alcohol, or exfoliating ingredients can strip the tan prematurely or cause discoloration.

Stick to tan-safe, hydrating, and sulfate-free products during your spray tan’s lifespan.

Things to avoid: Mineral oils, Dove products, and aerosol sunscreens.

5. Skin Conditions and Medications

Dry skin, eczema, or psoriasis can cause the tan to develop unevenly. Some medications, especially acne treatments or anything that increases skin cell turnover (like retinoids), can also shorten the life of your tan or cause patchiness.

Tip: Let me  know about any medications or skin conditions you may have so we can customize your tanning experience to best suit you!

6. Shaving or Waxing Too Close to Your Appointment

Hair removal too close to your appointment can leave your pores open, which may cause the solution to settle unevenly or leave dots. It can also irritate the skin, affecting how evenly the tan develops.

Tip: Shave morning or night before your spray tan, and waxing should be done a minimum of 24 hours before your spray tan.

7. Not Letting the Tan Fully Develop Before Rinsing

Washing off your tan too early, especially if you’re using a regular or overnight formula can result in a lighter color or uneven tone. Always follow the rinse instructions I’ve given you!

8. Hormones and Your Menstrual Cycle

Your menstrual cycle and hormone fluctuations can affect how your spray tan develops and wears. Some clients notice their tan doesn’t develop as dark, fades faster, or looks a bit uneven during certain phases of their cycle. Hormonal changes can impact skin texture, oil production, and pH balance, all of which can influence how the tanning solution reacts with your skin.

he first step in our YYC spray tans is applying a Ph spray which can help with these concerns.

Tip: If you’re tanning around your period and notice a difference in how your skin takes color, know it’s completely normal.

Let me know that you are approaching or on your cycle so we can adjust accordingly so you still achieve the result you are looking for!
